Helpful Tips to Effectively Clean Your Kitchen Knives

Knives are indispensable kitchen tools that make every chef's culinary experience so much easier. However, frequent use can cause damages to these tools such as wear, tear, and corrosion. Eventually, these conditions will affect the condition of your kitchen knives and turn them into dangerous pieces of scrap metal. That is not to mention the fact that replacing what was once a high-quality cutting tool will cost you money.

It is in the best interest of every chef to make sure that their kitchen knife set receives the best care. Proper maintenance will help increase the lifespan of your kitchen knife; this will make it useful for a long time and eliminate the need to buy new knives often. Below are some very useful tips that will help you improve your kitchen knife maintenance:

Wash your knife by hand

Kitchen knives are delicate tools, so manually wash your knife to make sure every spot is properly cleaned. Putting it in the dishwasher is not exactly a good idea and it's not the best way to clean your knives.

Don't mix your knife with other utensils

Mixing your knife with other kitchen utensils is not a recommendable way of cleaning your kitchen knives. For one, the edge might rub against other metallic objects which can cause damages. You might also end up injuring yourself as you dig for your knives in the pile of utensils.

Rinse it regularly

Rinse your knife and dry it after every time you slice something. In this way, you prevent residues from meat, vegetables, fruits, and other ingredients from sticking to the surface of your kitchen knife and avoid mixing different flavours.

Don't let it soak in soapy water

Soapy water can be murky. There is a possibility that you might accidentally pick the knife up by the blade and injure yourself. Also, simply soaking your kitchen knives for a long time in the water is a big no-no. Keeping them underwater increases the possibility of corrosion and other damages.

Refrain from putting your kitchen knives in the dishwasher

Again, always wash and dry your knife by hand. Dishwashers may be very abrasive and can damage the edge. Meanwhile, the detergent used may cause corrosion to your tool.

How to safely wash your knife

Improper handling of kitchen knives might injure you or cause damages to the blade. Here are the key steps to safely handling your kitchen knife set when washing:

  1. Keep the edge away from you.

  2. Wipe the spine first then clean its edge. Doing so will keep the sharp parts away from you.

  3. Rinse it with running water — preferably hot for sanitization.

  4. Wipe your knife with a clean cloth. You can start with the spine again then wipe its edge.

  5. Store it in a dry, safe location, like a storage block. Having a knife rack would be a good investment.

Proper cleaning maintains the quality and performance of your kitchen knives. Implementing the best practices of handling your knife ensures its longevity and keeps you safe from any unnecessary injury.
